Equality, Diversity, Sustainable Development and Support Policies

GENDER EQUALITY AND CULTURAL DIVERSITY

Gender equality and cultural diversity are fundamental values that drive the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne (NEM). Since its founding in 1991, NEM, led and chaired by a woman, embodies these principles in all its activities. Its board of directors maintains gender balance, composed of 2 women and 3 men, while the permanent administrative team includes 4 full-time equivalents, divided between 2 women (project coordination, communication, production and management assistance) and 2 men (general and artistic direction).

NEM ensures the promotion of gender equality and cultural diversity in the context of replacements or transfers of positions. A strict pay equity policy guarantees equal treatment for equal positions.

Since 2018, NEM has implemented an action plan against gender-based and sexual violence and harassment. This plan includes the designation of a reference person, the posting of specific instructions in workplaces and the integration of a dedicated clause in all employment contracts.

Aware of the underrepresentation of women in musical composition, NEM has adopted a proactive approach since 2020 by commissioning works from female composers, thus supporting emerging and established artists.

CULTURAL RIGHTS

In Quebec, cultural rights are at the heart of NEM's mission, focused on creation, production and dissemination. NEM is committed to integrating inclusion into each of its artistic projects, thus renewing its relationships with audiences, partners and territories.

In an approach deeply rooted in the Quebec context, each artistic project is based on:

  • Observation of local cultural specificities, including heritage, traditions and artistic expressions.
  • Integration of pedagogical and cultural objectives of local partners.
  • A cross-cutting approach aimed at diversifying and broadening access to contemporary music.

These commitments are realized through collaborations with local cultural organizations, weaving links between contemporary music and other forms of artistic expression.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Ecological responsibility is a priority for NEM. In response to current environmental challenges, the ensemble is a member of Quebec and international associations supporting sustainable arts.

Since 2021, NEM has adopted several ecological initiatives:

  • Sharing of resources and equipment in its premises.
  • Optimization of energy consumption and waste reduction.
  • Review of mobility practices to limit unnecessary travel.

In 2024, NEM will publish a Charter of Eco-responsible Commitments, mobilizing its teams to reduce the environmental footprint of its productions.

SUPPORT FOR PROFESSIONALIZATION

NEM values the transmission of knowledge and skills, an essential commitment in the Quebec cultural milieu. In partnership with educational institutions, organizations and local universities, it supports the next generation of artists and music professionals.

In 2023, NEM welcomed several interns in various fields such as technical management, communication and production.
