NEM International FORUM 2027
Composing the Future: Ecologies of Listening, Responsible Intelligences
The Nouvel Ensemble Moderne’s International FORUM takes a new direction in 2027, bringing together four emerging composers and two emerging conductors from diverse backgrounds in a shared creative journey.
From February to October, the cohort will develop new works through meetings, workshops and mentoring with NEM musicians, guest artists and researchers. Composition and conducting will be closely connected from the earliest stages of the creative process.
The theme “Ecologies of Listening, Responsible Intelligences” invites reflection on the human, cultural, technological and environmental relationships that shape music. It connects with Sonic Leadership, a concept developed by Jean-Michaël Lavoie at the Université de Montréal, which explores how listening, dialogue and shared responsibility can guide artistic processes.
This research-creation laboratory will culminate in an intensive residency in Montréal from October 22 to 30, 2027. All four works will be premiered with the NEM at the closing concert, conducted by the two emerging conductors and Jean-Michaël Lavoie.
