Created in 1991, the FORUM du NEM brings together on the same stage young composers under the age of 30 from all over the world. For this 14th edition, the NEM will focus on Quebec and Canada in order to showcase young local talent.

FORUM 2024

Four composers will be hosted in Montreal from March 10 to 22, 2024. During this time, the composers will work daily with the NEM and its conductors, Lorraine Vaillancourt and Jean-Michaël Lavoie.

PROGRAM :

  • Two weeks of activities fully open to the public;
  • A dozen rehearsals (develop the participants’ new works);
  • Profiles and presentations of the participants;
  • An analysis workshop with students from UdeM’s Faculty of Music;
  • A pre-concert talk (panel composed of the participants);
  • A panel discussion (panel composed of the selection committee members);
  • Two final concerts of the participants’ new works as well as works of previous participants

 

SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION

ELIGIBILITY

The call for applications is open until January 20, 2023 inclusive.

  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident;
  • Be 30 years or younger on January 20, 2023.

SELECTION

The selection committee will meet in January 2023 to select four applicants.

 

TERMS OF PARTICIPATION

The selected composers undertake to:

  • Compose an original work of approximately 15 minutes for the NEM’s 15 musicians:
    • 1 flute, 1 oboe, 2 clarinets, 1 bassoon,
    • 1 trumpet, 1 horn, 1 trombone,
    • 1 piano, 1 percussion,
    • 2 violins, 1 viola, 1 cello, 1 double bass.
  • Send the full score (written in concert pitch) and the individual parts to the NEM by January 19, 2024;
  • Be in Montreal from March 10 to 22, 2024 inclusive;
  • Participate in all the activities organized during the FORUM;
  • Agree that the work composed for the NEM will be presented in concert at the conclusion of the FORUM;
  • Agree that the work will be recorded during the concert to be released on a digital album in 2024–2025 (on the independent label ProNEM) and made available online on various streaming platforms.

 

ADDITIONAL NOTES

  • There is no registration fee.
  • The NEM will cover the living expenses of the four participants.
  • The participants will be responsible for the round-trip transportation costs to Montreal.
  • The NEM will support all grant applications related to this project.

 

APPLICATION

The application must include:

  • The completed application form (see below);
  • Proof of age and Canadian citizenship or permanent residence;
  • A curriculum vitae (3 pages maximum);
  • A letter of intent (1 page maximum);
  • Scores and recordings of two compositions:
    1. A work for chamber orchestra or small ensemble,
    2. A work of your choosing (with or without electronics).
